About Us
A Words About Woodlands
In 1966, the founders of Woodlands Community Temple sought to create a different kind of congregation. Focusing on the word “community,” they instilled in our members a feeling of belonging and involvement which has often been referred to as “the Woodlands Way.”
Today we are a vibrant, warm, diverse, and egalitarian community committed to creating a dynamic, innovative environment for all who wish to participate in Jewish life and ritual. We believe that an understanding of and an appreciation for differences – age, color, disability, sex, race, ethnicity, national origin, religion, sexual orientation, gender identity, and expression – lead to healthy and inclusive communities. We believe that by respecting all people and hearing all voices – by celebrating our shared humanity – we make better decisions for ourselves and for the communities we serve. We take a progressive approach to Jewish life, integrating a deep respect for Jewish tradition with the insights of contemporary living. We endeavor to be a dynamic voice in the Reform Movement and the constant evolution of modern Judaism.
Above all, we want people to love being Jewish. We want to bring joy and personal meaning to Judaism and Jewish experiences. We do this through participation: our worship is musical and exuberant. Adults at Woodlands are lifelong learners and often seek out a myriad of educational opportunities. We are also deeply connected to being “am Yisrael,” part of the larger Jewish people. This includes engaging lovingly, and thoughtfully, with our spiritual homeland and the modern State of Israel.
Whether near or far, from our inception, we have made a conscious philosophical decision to involve our congregation in areas of tikkun olam and tzedakah. With our organizational and interfaith partners, we provide for and protect our fellow humans and the planet we share. Long recognized as an area wide leader in issues of social justice, we march when it is time to march, and when it is time to call our representatives, we do. We are committed to freedom of the pulpit and an open, respectful exchange of ideas within our community.
The youth community at Woodlands is integrated into the larger community. Our kids and teens are valued members who stay involved through high school and beyond. We look at their educational time at Woodlands as filing their “Jewish toolbox,” which they can take with them on the road for the rest of their lives. Woodlands was a pioneer in promoting educational opportunities for learners with special needs, and we strive to maintain excellence in this area. Above all, we aim to provide transformative experiences, both inside and outside the classroom, where students and their families are inspired to learn and to make a difference in the world.
We believe Woodlands is a special place – makom shelibi oheyv – the place that our hearts hold dear – and we hope it will be the same for you!
