PROP ONE

THE NEW YORK EQUAL RIGHTS AMENDMENT
&
ABORTION/REPRODUCTIVE HEALTH CARE

The New York Equal Rights Amendment (now known as Prop One) proposes that no person shall be subject to governmental interference on the basis of ethnicity, national origin, age, disability, sexual orientation, gender identity or reproductive health care decisions.

The Reform Jewish community is a strong and vocal proponent of universal health care and equality for women in all health care programs. Jewish tradition teaches that life and health are precious and that it is the obligation of individuals and society to protect both. New York is fortunate that it has many laws protecting pregnancy decisions, but it is not a constitutional right. You can help change this in November.

There are several instances when Judaism not only condones abortions but mandates them. Mishnah Ohaloth 7:6, for example, forbids a woman from sacrificing her own life for that of the fetus, and if her life is threatened, permits her no other option but abortion. In cases of rape or incest terminating a pregnancy is permitted.

In November we will be voting for a new president.  By flipping your ballot over, you will be asked to determine whether or not to vote in favor of Prop One.  Please consider this message when casting your vote.
